Why Socks?

I never really understood why people are so crazy about sock knitting. Don't get me wrong, I love socks, I actually have a "thing" for socks, but knitting them?

A few months ago my head was literally spinning from a design that had me stumped. I needed a break, not from knitting, just a bit of distance between me and the grey pullover I had frogged 6 times. I decided to cast on a pair of socks and see what all of the hype was about.

The verdict? I'm hooked. I have decided to knit socks between every project, they will be my "in between" project. I will tell you why...

  • Firstly, socks force me to slow down. I know they are going to take forever to knit and I'm okay with that.
  • I am a one-project-at-a-time knitter. Because I could knit a sock pattern a dozen times, I don't mind if they sit on my needles while I work on something more pressing. It isn't likely I will need the 2mm double pointed needles for something else.
  • Aside from turning the heel and shaping the toe, socks are a mindless knit, perfect for movie watching.
  • It is possible to have too many hand knit cardigans, scarves and hats. You know you've reached this point when it becomes difficult to work them all into the rotation. You can never have too many pairs of knit socks.
  • One ball of yarn is more than enough
  • Socks make a very portable project
  • And lastly, socks don't have to flatter your figure. They don't have to be "your" colour. Socks are functional and get alot of wear so even if they turn out to be hideous they can still be useful hidden underneath your pant legs.
For someone who panics when they finish a knitting project, I really enjoy having a pair of socks waiting in the wings.
